I know for a fact that the child is the father's. I didn't cheat on him. Though his wife keeps telling people that there is no possible way. My ex-husband has dark brown hair, brown eyes and a natural tan. I have light brown hair, hazel eyes and very pale skin. His parents have very dark brown hair and brown eyes. My father is blonde hair blue eyed and my mother had light brown hair and hazel eyes. How rare is it for this to happen, and it is obviously possible because it did happen. If anyone knows anything about how this works please provide to insight and please explain it to me.

This is really common! Your dad is is blonde hair blue eyed and so is your son, they are related. Dont worry what his wife says, perhaps she doesnt want your ex to have a relationship with your baby, and you. Ignore her, she needs to get a life and your ex should stand up for his son.

eye color and hair color are complicated traits not controlled by only one gene (which many people will say).

somewhere along the lines, in your husbands family, someone has blue eyes (maybe grandparents or great grandparents).

he carried some of the genes for blue eyes as did you. same for hair.

its not rare at all it just sounds like genes skipped ur generation to your kiddo. now if you and ur ex had blue eyes, and ur child ended up with brown then that probably means its not his.

Each of the parents have to have a recessive gene for blue eyes and blonde hair. I also have brown eyes and dark blonde hair and 3 of my 4 children have blue eyes and very blonde hair due to the recessive genes shared by my ex-husband and myself. It is a very common occurance!!

a fundimental fact of genetics is that a child will not be darker than his darkest parent. They can be lighter.If this is really a prob. check DNA.

Your child has probably got his blue eyes and blonde hair from your father. It is quite rare for this to happen as brown eyes tend to dominate blue, but we have 3 children, 2 of whom have blue eyes and the other very dark brown (I love her eyes!)

Right... you got genes from your mum and dad, one of each was expressed in you- light brown hazel- but your egg contains both, which is active is a matter of methylation of the allel(gene copy) Your husband gave 2 copies, and just by chance your child got your dads hair and eye colour.

You of course, are a carrier of the blue eyed haired allele since your father had blue eyes. You got your hazel eyes from your mother.

For a child to have blue eyes, it must have two blue eyed alleles, one from the mother, one from the father.

That must mean that your ex husband is a carrier of the blue eyed allele as well. If his parents have brown eyes, one of them must be a carrier of the blue eyed allele. Maybe one of your ex-husbands great-grandparents or grandparents had blue eyes? Recessive traits such as blue eyes can stay dormant for a long time and can pop up mysteriously from distant generations. Anything can happen in genetics!

The same thing applies for blonde hair. It is also recessive, like blue eyes.

Based on the information you gave about 1 time in 20 you would have a blue eyed child

Unfortunately not much is know about the genetics of hair colour. I've included a reference that goes into more detail.

Remember too that lots of people start out with blue eyes and blonde hair and then it changes later. My half sister was a blue-eyed blonde when she was a child but now is a green-eyed brunette.
