Personal experience talking. I have brown hair, and I dyed it red repeatedly. Red is closer to brown that blonde is, but it still damaged my hair immensely. Going blonde will require bleaching, and it will look fake once your roots grow in. Don't go blonde unless you want fried hair. If you are still bored with brown, consider getting dark blonde highlights or, at the worst, coloring your hair a blonde that is close to your original shade of brown. That way, when your roots grow in, your hair won't look fake. Just make sure the highlights are close to your natural color. Also, don't color your hair at home. Always get a stylist to do it! Though be aware that almost nothing is as damaging to hair as coloring it.

you can do it at home...but do you already have color on your hair? that makes a difference as to what to buy or how it would turnout. Going to a pro would be best cuz sometimes going blonde will pull a brassy/orange tone. But if you really want to do it at home....if you have no color on your hair now, any color brand you pick should work fine. Go for a level 9 or 10 (should say on box), it might not say level but it should say something like 9 or 10G. Then follow directions exactly as it says! It would be best if you mixed a small amount of the formula and cut a bit out of your hair (from the back behind ear or nape area is best) about 2 to 3 inches long if possible, and out that small amount of mixed up formula on the strand and let it sit full time to see what color it turns out to be, before u do it to your whole head.

Another option is all over highlights....that could make you pretty blonde too.

i have naturally light brown/dark blonde hair and lightened my hair for years at home using loreal haircolor. if you have virgin hair, you should have good results with these. you're probably a level 6 like me, and i was able to lighten to a 9 1/2 just fine. (10 is the highest level-platinum blonde, 1 is jet black). just make sure you do the test strand first-the box instructions will tell you how. my hair was strong, shiny, and people thought i was naturally that light.

As for brands-I've had good experience with loreal preference. i currently use their medium brown neutral shade-level 5. As for type of blonde, i think you mean shade-you can go either ash/cool or golden/warm tones. this has to do with skin tone mostly-go with what foundation tone you buy-cool ,neutral, or warm. make sure it looks good with your eyes as well.
