Does anyone know the best way to get dark hair blonde without bleaching it?

My daughter, who is 14 wants to lighten her dark brown hair to blonde. I am willing to help her do this, but I'm not sure what the best method is. I'm afraid the over the counter color will just turn her hair that copper color, but I don't want to bleach her hair and damage it. Any suggestions??

PLEASE DON'T use straight peroxide! Bad advice! You'll end up with a mess! Definitely go to a colorist! People try to save money by doing it themselves, but something like this is too difficult at home. Chances are high that the results won't be what you want and you'll have to go and get color correction done and that can end up being very expensive. You would be far better off starting with a colorist. The reason being when hair lightens a level there is a corresponding base undertone. When you are dark brown and lifting to a blonde (BTW...are you talking dark blonde, medium blonde, light blonde, or extra light blonde?) there are stages of lightening that you go through: red, red/orange, then orange, then orange/yellow, then yellow, and then pale yellow. The orange and orange/yellow stages are the hardest to break through. That is the point that most home colorists start freaking out and that is where things can go very wrong!

There are high-lift colors that a colorist can do that are not a bleach, BUT they require the use of 40 volume peroxide (really stout stuff!) Whereas, most bleaches only require 20 volume peroxide. (Just a note...bleaches have come a LONG way in recent years, much more buffered and conditioning than they used to be! Technology is wonderful!) She needs to decide what level of blonde she is wanting to go for. But remember, even if she decides on a DARK blonde, you're talking 3 shades lighter than her natural color. She will definitely be able to see the outgrowth in 3-4 weeks and will have to get the new growth retouched in that amount of time, otherwise, if it grows out beyond that (approx. 1/2 inch) then you will get gold bands in the hair, which for the first retouch she probably wouldn't notice too much, but then after that it becomes very noticeable. If she decides on going lighter than a dark blonde, that would be 4+ shades and you simply won't be able to do that with a color. Bleaching would be the only option. Either way, a big question you have to ask yourselves is are you ready for the upkeep? I don't want to discourage you, but upkeep needs to be a priority when you are lightening that many shades. 1-2 inch roots really can look icky.

I would suggest maybe trying foil highlights. It will give her the feeling of being lighter, without the upkeep/maintenance of an all over color. If you foil, you might be able to drag out the retouch to every 2-3 months. Good luck!

Just fill a spray bottle with peroxide. Spray it into her hair and brush thoroughally to distribute it. I did it as a teenager and it worked great. I didn't have "brassy" or "coppery" hair at all. My natural colour is almost black.

I would take her in to a professional (they'll know how to mix the colour appropriately for dark hair) and consider getting just a few highlights done first, to see how she likes them. It's cheaper than bleaching the whole head of hair, especially if she changes her mind afterwards. Get a few foils done on the top, and if the colour works out she can always go back and colour the rest. :o)

Don't make the same mistake so many people do and try to do it yourself. The best thing is to go to the hairdresser and have them do it. That way if it comes out a weird color they can fix it without damaging her hair too badly. But if that is too expensive/time consuming, do a gradual process at home. Have her go a light brown, then a dirty blond, then whatever blond color she wants. Even though she'll have to wait 3-4 weeks inbetween colors, she won't have to worry about it looking brassy or pink. Plus she may find an in between coloring she likes even better! Make sure she uses a color treated conditioner after she dyes it so her hair doesn't dry out. Garnier Fructise has great products, they are the only ones I use cause my hair is thick and easily damaged. I hope it comes out great!

Go to a professional. Hair goes through many stages of lightening and the darker her hair is, the brassy it can turn. Why risk it? You can end up with an orange brassy color at the roots because color lifts differently all over. Too tricky to do on your own. Drugstore colors are very different than professional colors and the results are very unpredictable. Your daughter will be embarrassed to go to school if you mess up so take her to a salon.

It's a good idea to spend lots of time in the sun, but wear sunblock, this naturally lightens your hair and normally won't damage it.

please don't spray her head with household peroxide, its not going to do what you you have been told. It will go brassy, and it will damage her hair. And as far as the advice to go light brown then dirty blonde then lighter blonde, well not gonna work. Color CAN NOT remove color, she will have stripes if you do this. Depending on how dark she truly is, she could possibly be brought to a natural tone dirty blonde. However, if she is thinking of being Jessica Simpson and coming from Katie Holmes, well then your looking at a bleaching process. No way around it. However, having a professional do this isn't so bad cause we can watch the hair and feel when we have hit our wall. We know when to stop before its too late. Another option, which she might just go for and i recommend to my darker clients who insist they belong blonde, would be to highlight using foils. Load her head up with dirty blonde and platinum blonde highlights, the dirty blonde will be color and the platinum would be a bleach process, BUT at least your not faced with roots to cover in 3 weeks time which can be pricey, AND she won't look like a bumble bee, AND you don't have to worry about the bleach on her scalp which can make a teenager's scalp very sensitive especially since she's just into puberty. Hope this all help and best of luck. Oh and find a colorist not just a stylist, they are educated in tricky color like this. Worry free this way.

It's not possible to lift haircolour that much without using bleach. Over the counter colour will only lift two (occasionally 3)shades without brassiness. The lightest she will get is a light brown.

If she wants to be blond and you don't want to risk doing it yourself, then going to a hairdresser is the best option.

I am a professional color expert. I do VERY expensive corrective color procedures weekly on people who attempt to do what you want to do. No matter what anybody says, there is NO way to get hair darker than light brown to the blonde stages without using bleach. The good news is modern pigment removal products %26lt;what used to be known as hair bleaches%26gt; are not the bleaches you remember from a few years back. Many color removal products are less damaging the heat styling tools. The short answer is get her some foiled in highlights at a moderately priced salon. Depending on the length of her hair it should be between 60 and 120 dollars. It is important to note that many over the counter hair color products are no better than the bleaching products from years ago. The very best you could ever get with non professional work will be bright orange or copper gold. This is what I fondly refer to as "oops blonde." Its a lot more damaging and costly to "correct" color than it is to have it done right in the first place. Don't learn it the hard way.
